A Defeat That Was Not Final

A Defeat That Was Not Final
Survival beneath official history
The Checquy believes the Grafter organization has been dismantled after the costly invasion of the Isle of Wight. In fact, its leaders and surviving resources escape complete destruction by hiding their survival and rebuilding elsewhere.
The apparent end becomes a long interval of secrecy. The Checquy retains fear and fragmentary evidence, while the Grafters refine their fleshcrafting beyond the forms once seen in battle.
The New Infiltration

The New Infiltration
Influence through preparation
Under Graaf Ernst von Suchtlen’s approach, the Grafters cultivate collaborators, redirect Checquy funds, and establish Camp Caius as an illicit training operation. Their aim is not simply a public invasion but leverage inside the institution.
The scheme exploits existing grievances and the Checquy’s own secrecy. A hidden army grows through money, recruitment, and bodily alteration while official systems continue to function.
Scouts and Warning Signs

Scouts and Warning Signs
A hostile presence becomes visible
The Checquy captures Peter Van Syoc, whose implants reveal that the Grafters can make an operative a communications device and can remotely compromise his body. His final message warns that an invasion is being prepared.
The Croatoan soon reports another Grafter agent in Los Angeles. These encounters make the threat international, while the Court debates whether the evidence signals an imminent army or a more concealed operation.
The Network Breaks Cover

The Network Breaks Cover
Infiltration becomes violence
A coordinated attack during a formal reception exposes Grafter-enhanced Retainers and confirms that the organization has penetrated Checquy ranks. Rook Gestalt is unmasked as a traitor, but the scale of the attack suggests that the betrayal reaches further.
Emergency screening and lockdown follow. The Checquy realizes that compromised personnel may have access to the very facilities and procedures meant to protect it.
A Rival Within the Enemy

A Rival Within the Enemy
The hidden purpose changes
Graaf Ernst von Suchtlen arrives in secret and explains that he opposed Graaf Gerd de Leeuwen’s move toward a violent coup. He says the long infiltration was meant to force recognition and create grounds for a negotiated alliance, not to conquer Britain openly.
Myfanwy accepts that the claim must be tested with the Court and Croatoan rather than accepted privately. The threat does not vanish with Gerd’s death: it changes into a difficult political bargain with an organization that has already harmed the Checquy.
